And here we go with another documentary.  Today's movie is called "I am" and it is the funniest and serious documentary that I've ever watched.

Hold on! How come fun and serious? At the same time? Yes, at the same time.

 The director Tom Shadyac, who was responsible for successes like Bruce Almighty, The Nutty Professor and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, is able to transform an idea (that in a lot of other directors’ hands would come out lame) into a very amusing and thrilling documentary that is able to make anyone smile in the thought of it.

The idea was simple enough.  Interview influential thinkers about the problems in the world, and get their advice on what they think is the cause of it all. 

My boyfriend and I heard about the movie from a friend.  She was so excited about it that we thought that we should go and see it too.  We went to the same movie theater because there was no other place that was showing it. We got there, sat with our "small" soda - read: Brazilian in the US shocked with the size of the products, and the movie began.

I have to say that the experience of watching this documentary was something that I have never experienced before. Like I said, the theme of the movie sounded to me at first a little bit lame, especially applied in a documentary (because it’s usually very serious and technical). But a movie never made me "shut up" as much as this one did.  I did not take my eyes off the screen the whole time. 

The story about a man who wins over Hollywood by making movies that made millions, but who, after getting in an accident, decides to change his life (becoming a more simple person), seems at least like a story worthy of making a movie.  Tom Shadyac used his own personal experience to tell a story that would open other people's eyes about the world.  About how life's fragile and how we need to take care of it.

The charisma and conviction that Tom Shadyach had when making this movie (writing, directing and participating in the interviews) was so huge that it makes you feel like he is giving the message directly to you.  You get stuck in the screen, being thrilled while laughing at the same time, like if a friend was telling you about a big adventure that he or she went through.

What made me more interested and fascinated about the movie was the fact that Tom Shadyac didn't attach himself to a script, he let the movie take its own course.  Starting with the idea of "what's wrong with world and what we can do about it?", he ended up by the end of the movie figuring out what's right about it.

The movie shows us a lot about how human beings and nature in general is connected. It shows us how we don't know even half of what our own body is capable of.

An example of this in the movie comes when several interviews (with the most different types of specialists) is shown about the heart.  It shows that our heart can "predict" emotions before they actually happen. I'll explain: the scientists measured the frequency of the heart seconds before showing it a picture of something that would cause some emotion in who is looking at it (anger, anguish, happiness), and it recorded reactions from the heart milliseconds before showing the picture. 

In other words, the movie brings a little bit of everything to the public, from philosophers and renowned professors, to scientists who offer completely innovative and unknown experiences that are not common knowledge in the general public. 

With an innocent sense of humor dealing with really serious subjects that involve the billions of human beings on earth, “I Am” is able to rescue that love for life and nature that each one of us has inside.  I say that because in the end of the movie, all the people that were in the movie theater (which, unfortunately wasn't as many) were so peaceful and friendly that it was like if each one of them knew each other before, even saying goodbye and wishing each other a good night. That's the effect that the movie has, to make people to feel like they're not alone in the world, make you want to go out there and just enjoy life (with responsibility, of course) without worrying about the "values" imposed by society nowadays.

I am its without a doubt in my list of most beautiful movies I've ever watched! Unfortunately it is very hard to find it in a movie theater, and I couldn't even find it in shopping websites, but if you do then buy it (and please let me know!), because as I always say: It’s definitely worth to watch it.

 

E lá vamos nós com mais um documentário! O filme de hoje se chama "I am" e é o documentário mais divertido e sério que eu já assisti.

Espera ai! Como assim divertido e sério? Ao mesmo tempo? Sim, ao mesmo tempo.

O diretor Tom Shadyac, que foi responsável por sucessos como Ace Ventura, O Todo Poderoso e O Professor Aloprado, consegue transformar um tema (que na mão de vários outros diretores saíria sem graça) em um divertido e emocionante documentário, que é capaz de fazer qualquer um sorrir no final.

A idéia era simples. Entrevistar pensadores influentes sobre os problemas do mundo, e ouvir seus conselhos sobre o que eles acham que é a causa de tudo isso.

Eu e meu namorado ficamos sabendo sobre I am por uma amiga. Ela estava tão empolgada sobre o filme que achamos que deveríamos assistir também.
Fomos ao mesmo cinema pois não estava sendo exibido em nenhum outro. Chegamos, sentamos com o nosso copo de refrigerante "pequeno" - leia-se: brasileira nos EUA chocada com o tamanho dos produtos -, e o filme começou.

Devo dizer que a experiência de assistir este documentário foi algo que nunca experimentei antes. Como eu disse anteriormente, o tema do filme a princípio me pareceu bem sem graça, principalmente sendo aplicado a um documentário (pois normalmente é sério e bem técnico). Mas um filme nunca me fez "calar a boca" tanto quanto este. Por definitivamente nenhum segundo eu tirei os olhos da tela.

A história de um homem que ganha Hollywood fazendo filmes que lucram milhões, mas que, depois de sofrer um acidente, resolve mudar sua vida (se tornando uma pessoa mais simples), parece pelo menos uma história digna de filme. Tom Shadyac usa sua experiencia pessoal para contar uma história que abriria os olhos das pessoas sobre o mundo. Sobre como a vida é frágil e como devemos tomar conta dela.

O carisma e a convicção que Tom Shadyac tinha ao fazer o filme  (escrevendo, dirigirindo e participando nas entrevistas) eram tamanha que te faz sentir como se ele estivesse passando a mensagem diretamente para você. Voce fica preso a tela, se emocionando e rindo ao mesmo tempo, como se um amigo próximo estivesse te contando uma grande aventura que ele(a) passou.

O que mais me deixou interessada e fascinada pelo filme é o fato de que Tom Shadyac não se prendeu a um script, ele deixou com que o filme tomasse seu próprio rumo - começando pela idéia "O que há de errado no mundo e o que podemos fazer sobre isso", ele acabou, no final, mostrando na verdade o que há de certo nele.

O filme nos mostra muito como nós seres humanos e a natureza em geral estamos conectados. Nos mostra como não conhecemos nem a metade da capacidade do nosso próprio corpo.

Um exemplo disso no filme é quando várias entrevistas (com os mais diferentes tipos de especialistas) é mostrado sobre o coração. Ele mostra que nosso coração consegue "prever" emoções antes mesmo de elas acontecerem. Explico: o cientista mede a frequência do coração segundos antes de mostrar uma foto que vai causar alguma emoção em quem está olhando (raiva, angústia, felicidade), e consegue perceber reações do coração milésimos de segundos antes de mostrar a foto.

Ou seja, o filme trás de tudo um pouco para o telespectador, desde filósófos e professores renomados, à cientistas que oferecem experiências totalmente inovadora e desconhecidas que não são de conhecimento comum no público em geral.

Com um humor inocente tratando de assuntos muito sérios e que dizem respeito aos bilhões de seres humanos na terra, "I am" consegue resgatar aquele amor que cada um tem dentro de si pela vida e pela natureza. Digo isso pois no final do filme, todas as pessoas que estavam na sala de cinema (que infelizmente não eram muitas) estavam tão pacificas e amigáveis umas com as outras que era como se cada um dentro do cinema se conhecesse, estavam até se despedindo e desejando uns ao outros uma boa noite.  Este é o efeito que o filme tem, fazer com que as pessoas sintam que elas não estão sozinhas no mundo, faz voce querer sair por ai e apenas aproveitar a vida (com responsabilidade, é claro) sem se preocupar com os "valores" impostos pela sociedade hoje em dia.

I am está sem dúvida na lista dos filmes mais bonitos que ja vi! Infelizmente é muito dificil de achar para assistir nos cinemas, não consegui achá-lo nem mesmo em sites de compra, mas se conseguirem comprem (e por favor me avisem!), pois como eu sempre digo: vale a pena assisti-lo.

The Soviet Story

Between the years of 1932 to 1933, Ukraine was the stage of one of the biggest and largely unknown tragedies in our history. In that winter, Stalin ordered all the food supply in the country to be confiscated, leaving millions of men, women and children without even bread to eat.  Stalin's army then created a border around the country so no one could leave, shooting "on the spot," those who tried to steal any grains to feed themselves or their families. Thus, in a space of one year, nearly 7 million people died of starvation.

 
This is a genocide that very few people know about.  A shame because more people died in this tragedy than in the Holocaust, and it fell into the black hole of history.  Several factors, however, contribute to the ignorance of this sad and shameful part of our story, but that's not what I want to discuss here today. In fact, you must be wondering why am I saying all this things, after all this is a blog about movies, etc.
 
Well, let me start from the beginning:
 
I heard about what happened in Ukraine a few months ago but I didn't really get interested in the story, or better, I didn't take it seriously  at first.  I thought, how would I not know about a tragedy so big like this, and one  that happened not so long ago?
Well, I remembered this week about the story and decided to research about it more out of curiosity; what I learned completely shocked me.
 
An estimate ranging from 7 to 11 million dead; a country that still suffers the consequences of what happened, while the rest of world (or a big part of it) does not even recognize Holodomor (the name given to the tragedy) as a genocide, and survivors still afraid of even talking about it.
 
And in the midst of several websites giving lots of different explanations (some even defending the idea that everything was fake and it was actually caused from a natural disaster), I found a website from Portugal with two videos that were taken from a documentary that was telling, in an open way about what happen in the Soviet Union and in World War II.
After watching one of the videos I got obsessed with finding the rest of the documentary because it seemed to me so well done and serious that I couldn't lose the opportunity of watching the rest of it.  I bought it on Amazon and watched it as soon as I got it.  

Although I was very excited, the movie disappointed me.  The documentary tells you the story of the Soviet Union and World War II in a different way from anything I have ever watched about the topic.  The director didn't seem to care about the rest of the world's opinion, he just wanted to express his personal opinion about it.
But the movie loses itself a little, focusing too much on criticizing communism, using facts that I should say are a little bit doubtful.  It seems to me that the director is a really strong anti-Communist, as he tries to use any fact that he can to criticize; like making comparisons between Comunim and Nazism - using the posters of both ideology to "prove" that they were both equal, mentioning how Stalin and Hitler joined each other in the beginning and making it look like they were "partners" until the end of World War II - which is not true. One of the scenes that might have caused most controversy its when they show an amateur footage showing a document where Stalin and Hitler signed an agreement of sharing Europe - The movie says that right after the shooting of the amateur video the document was never found again.  

Besides that the movie uses shocking pictures over and over again, dramatic songs and a narrator with a dark voice as dramatic as the music.  These are some of the tools that the movie uses to bring about certain emotions from the viewers (like sadness, anger, etc.) knowing that people have the tendency to believe what they watch on TV, especially if it's something sad and that shocks them.

I was also disappointed by the fact that I was expecting to watch something that would finally talk about what really happened in Ukraine seriously, but unfortunately the topic was only given 10 minutes - in the beginning of the movie.  Despite some mentions during the movie, the whole event is used as just another topic to strengthen the director's critique of communism…the tragedy in Ukraine is soon forgotten.  In other words, the movie becomes a major disappointment, as the discussion of the tragedy was used just to make a point, not to reveal the true history of the genocide.
 

 One of the curiosities of the movie is that when the movie had its premiere in Europe, Russian (even though it hadn't been released in the country yet) media launched a big protest to denounce the movie and its director, causing big demonstrations in the streets of Moscow,  where dolls representing the director were burned.  But this didn't affect the premiere and it actually earned a good review from "The Economist".
 
After all this, I still have not found a movie that would give credit to so many Ukrainians who suffered and still suffer with what happened, however I still think that it's worth watching "The Soviet Story".  It's a well done movie that, despite what I mentioned above, tries to express things in a way that few movies have the courage to express.
 



 



















Entre os anos de 1932/1933 a Ucrânia protagonizou uma das maiores e quase desconhecida tragédias da história. Naquele inverno Stalin ordenou que todo o suprimento de comida no país fosse confiscado, deixando milhões de homens, mulheres e crianças sem um pão para comer. O exército de Stalin criou um cordão em volta do país para que ninguem pudesse deixa-lo, atirando "no ato" aqueles que tentassem roubar os grãos. Com isso, em um espaço de um ano, aproximadamente 7 milhões de pessoas morreram de inanição.

 
Este é um genocídio que pouquissimas pessoas tem conhecimento, uma vergonha, pois é maior do que o Holocausto em numeros de mortos e caiu no buraco negro da história.
Vários fatores, porém, contribuem para o desconhecimento dessa parte triste e vergonhosa de nossa história, mas não é isso que quero discutir aqui hoje. Na verdade, vocês devem estar se perguntando o por que de eu estar falando tudo isso, afinal, este é um blog sobre filmes, etc.
 
Bem, deixe-me começar pelo começo:
 
Ouvi sobre o que aconteceu na Ucrânia há alguns meses atras mas não me interessei muito pela história, ou melhor, não levei muito a sério - Eu pensei, como eu não iria saber de uma tragédia tão grande como essa sendo que aconteceu a tão pouco tempo atrás?
Bem, essa semana me lembrei da história e resolvi pesquisar sobre isso mais por curiosidade mesmo; mas o que eu achei me deixou completamente chocada!
 
Uma estimativa que vai de 7 até 11 milhões de mortos; um país ainda sofrendo as consequências do que aconteceu, enquanto que o resto do mundo (ou grande parte dele) nem ao menos reconhece Holodomor (nome dado à tragédia) como um genocídio e sobreviventes ainda com medo de se quer falarem sobre o assunto.
 
E em meio de vários sites dando as mais diversas explicações (alguns até mesmo defendendo a idéia de que foi tudo uma farsa e que na verdade a tragédia foi causada por um desastre natural), achei um site de Portugal com dois vídeos retirados de um documentário contando de uma forma mais aberta o que aconteceu na União Soviética e na 2ª Guerra Mundial.
Após ver um dos vídeos fiquei obcecada em achar o resto do documentário pois me pareceu tão bem feito e sério que eu nao poderia perder a chance de assisti-lo por completo.
Comprei o filme no Amazon e fui logo assisti-lo.
 
Apesar de muito animada, tenho que admitir que o filme me decepcionou.
O documentário conta a história da União Soviética e da 2ª Guerra Mundial de uma forma diferente de qualquer outra coisa que eu tenha assistido sobre o assunto. O diretor não parecia se importar com a opnião do resto do mundo, ele apenas queria expressar a sua opnião pessoal.
Porém o filme se perde um pouco, se concentrando muito em criticar o comunismo, utilizando-se de "fatos" que devo dizer um pouco duvidosos.
Me parece que o diretor é um forte anti-comunista pois tenta usar tudo que lhe aparece para criticar; Como fazendo comparações quase que o tempo todo entre comunismo e Nazismo - comparando os cartazes de ambas ideologias para "provar" que ambas eram iguais, citando como Stalin e Hitler se uniram no começo e fazendo parecer que foram "parceiros" até o final da 2ª guerra mundial - o que não é verdade. Uma das cenas que pode ter causado mais polêmica, é quando mostram uma filmagem amadora mostrando um documento assinado por Stalin e Hitler divindo a Europa - o filme diz que logo após a filmagem deste video amador o documento nunca mais foi encontrado.


Fora isso o filme usa fotos chocantes repetidas vezes, músicas dramáticas e um narrador com uma voz sombria e tão dramática quanto as músicas; essas são algumas das ferramentas que o filme usa para poder trazer certas emoções dos telespectadores (como tristeza, raiva, etc) sabendo que as pessoas tem a tendência a acreditar muito naquilo que veêm pela televisão, principalmente se é algo triste e que as chocam.
 
Fiquei decepcionada também pelo fato de que eu estava esperando ver algo que finalmente falasse a sério sobre o que aconteceu na Ucrânia, mas infelizmente a este assunto foi dado apenas 10 minutos - no começo. Tirando algumas menções durante o filme, o assunto é apenas usado para reforçar a crítica ao comunismo... a tragédia na Ucrânia é logo esquecida. Ou seja, o filme se tornou uma decepção, sendo a discussão sobre a tragédia apenas usada para provar um ponto e não para revelar a verdadeira história sobre o genocídio.
 

Uma das curiosidades é que quando o filme teve sua premiere na Europa a Russia (mesmo que o filme ainda não tivesse sido lançado no país) fez uma enorme propaganda contra o documentáro e o diretor, causando grandes protestos nas ruas de Moscow, onde bonecos representando o diretor foram queimados. Mas isso não abalou a premiere e acabou rendendo um bom comentário da revista "The Economist".
 
 Depois de tudo isso ainda não consegui achar um filme que desse crédito a tantos ucranianos que sofreram e ainda sofrem com o que aconteceu. Porém ainda acho que vale a pena assistir a "The Soviet Story". É um filme bem feito que apesar de tudo o que citei a cima, tenta se expressar de uma forma que poucos tem a coragem de se expressar.

Oh no!! Another movie about poverty in Brazil!

And this time, a documentary about poverty and garbage shaped into a work of art. (what?)

I (like a lot of Brazilians) am tired of watching movies about the favelas (slums) in Brazil.  Especially the ones from Rio de Janeiro.  I’m tired of the stereotypes created by it.  I promised myself that if I happened to see another movie with this theme I would not write about because it makes me mad how things are generalized - Brazil: Women, Carnival and Favelas.

But I just so happened to run across this documentary called "Waste Land" that tells the story of an artist that decided to create art with recyclable trash and with the intention to help the garbage pickers featured in the film.

Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist that lives in New York, had the idea of making art out of garbage and at the same time help the local pickers who worked a landfill in Rio de Janeiro. His goal was to make something that would benefit the community (the association of workers) encouraging the pickers to want something more for their own lives.

His journey begins with a few interviews with the workers and taking some pictures; just talking at first.

With the interviews, big stories are soon discovered.

The most touching one was Tião's (which, of course, ended up being of the main story of the movie), a simple man that had only the dream of creating an Association to help the pickers from Jardim Gramacho, in which nobody believed.

Every Brazilian knows that life in Brazil isn't the easiest one; corruption, everything being very expensive, politicians that are more worried about raising their own salary (which I have to say is already ridiculously high) than taking care of the people that elected them; all this causes people not to have easy conditions to live under.

What touched me most in Wasteland is the way that even the pickers in Jardim Gramacho, who are at the very bottom of this situation, show themselves as happy people, in spite of all they have to go through. They're strong, good natured people.

The character that caught my attention the most was Valter do Santos, one of the oldest pickers in Jardim Gramacho, who unfortunately passed away right after the recordings but who left great lessons in the movie.  Lessons that not even the greatest philosophers could give: lessons of life.

Valter dos Santos was a simple person, a good character and personality. He was also the Vice President of the Association of Pickers from Jardim Gramacho; a man that only worried about his co-workers.

An example.

I started this article with the intention of talking about the movie in a different way than you'll find out there.

But I realize that it’s impossible to talk about it without falling in love with the stories of overcoming, and for all the help that Vik Muniz gave to these people.

It is impossible to not be cliché.

It is definitely a movie that talks about poverty in a different way. It is not just another documentary about the subject that after it is complete, will not remember the place or the people it involved.  Vik Muniz proves that there is still people in the world that care about society, and who, even after becoming successful (as is his case)  come back to where they're from to try to help what is wrong.

The movie is definitely worth it to watch for that lesson.

Oh não!! Outro filme sobre pobreza no Brasil!

E dessa vez um documentário sobre a pobreza e o lixo em forma de obra de arte. (Oi?)

Eu (assim como muitos brasileiros) estou cansada de assistir filmes sobre as favelas brasileiras (em especial as do Rio de Janeiro), cansada do estereótipo criado em torno disso, e prometi  a mim mesma que se acontecesse de eu assistir outro filme com o mesmo tema, não iria escrever sobre isso pois me irrita como as coisas se tornam generalizadas - Brasil: mulher, carnaval e favela.

Mas aconteceu de cair na minha mão este documentário chamado "Waste Land" que contava a história de um artista que decidiu criar arte com lixo reciclável, e que também tinha a intenção de ajudar os catadores da região.

Vik Muniz, um artista brasileiro que mora em Nova Iorque, tem a idéia de fazer arte com o lixo e ao mesmo tempo ajudar os catadores locais. Seu objetivo era fazer algo que os beneficiasse eventualmente, voltando todo o dinheiro da venda dos quadros para a comunidade, para a "Assossiação", incentivando os catadores a quererem algo mais para suas vidas.

A jornada da equipe de Vik Muniz começa fazendo algumas entrevistas com os trabalhadores, tirando algumas fotos e apenas os entrevistando.

Entre as entrevistas, grandes histórias foram descobertas.

A mais comovente foi a de Tião (que claro, se tornou uma das histórias centrais do filme), um homem simples que apenas tinha o sonho de criar uma Assossiação para ajudar os catadores de Jardim Gramacho, no qual ninguém acreditava.

Bem eu como todos os brasileiros, sabemos que a vida no Brasil não é a das mais fáceis; corrupção, tudo muito caro, políticos que são mais preocupados em aumentar o próprio salário (o que digasse de passagem ja é ridiculamente alto) do que cuidar do povo que os elegeu; tudo isso leva com que muita gente não tenha condições de sobreviver, e o que me deixou mais comovida no filme é o fato de que mesmo os catadores de Jardim Gramacho estarem nesta situação, se mostram pessoas felizes, apesar de tudo que vivem, se mostram pessoas de fibra, de boa indôle.




E uma das pessoas que mais me chamou atenção no filme foi Valter dos Santos, um dos catadores mais velhos de Jardim Gramacho, que infelizmente veio a falecer após as filmagens, mas que deixou grandes ensinamentos no filme; ensinamentos estes que nem grandes filósofos poderiam dar: ensinamento de vida.
Valter dos Santos era uma pessoa simples, um homem de bom caráter e personalidade. Ele era também o Vice Presidente da Associação dos Catadores de Jardim Gramacho; um homem que apenas se preocupava com seus colegas de trabalho.

Um exemplo.



Eu comecei este post com a intenção de falar sobre o filme de um forma diferente das que normalmente irão encontrar por ai.

Mas eu percebi que é impossível falar sobre ele sem se derreter pelas histórias de superação e por toda a ajuda que Vik Muniz deu a estas pessoas.

É impossível não ser clichê!

É definitivamente um filme que trata sobre a pobreza no Brasil de uma forma diferente. Não é apenas mais um documentário sobre o assunto mas que depois de feitas as imagens não se lembram mais do lugar ou das pessoas.

Vik Muniz prova que ainda há pessoas no mundo que se preocupam com a sociedade, e que mesmo depois de se tornarem bem sucedidas (como é o caso dele) voltam as suas raízes para ajudar a concertar aquilo que está errado.

Definitivamente vale a pena assistir!

Talking about Natural Born Killers is always a pleasure!
This movie is a classic, without a doubt. 


When I watched it for the first time, I did it only for entertainment. I wasn’t expecting too much, I thought it would just be another movie that mixes up action/drama.  Man was I wrong! Natural Born Killers is much more than an entertaining movie – it’s a blunt criticism of society, sensationalist TV shows, and how people let themselves be manipulated to buy into whatever they see on TV. 

Even without too much enthusiasm when I watched it for the first time, I could not NOT love the way every scene and theme was done, but even though some of the psychedelic scenes get a little confusing, for a big fan of black humor (which the movie is filled with), the movie is perfect.

When I watched it for the second time, after having conversations with friends about it, I started to view the film as a commentary on society, and not just as an entertaining movie. The result was a bigger admiration for the movie and the certainty that the partnership between Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone could do no wrong, even though one of the most interesting things about the making of the film is the fact that the script was sold by Tarantino to Oliver Stone when he was still a video store clerk.  After Oliver Stone changed a lot of aspects of the script, Tarantino became averse to it, and disowned the movie’s authorship.

Besides this small difference in opinion, the movie portrays really surreal scenes that make a knot in the viewer’s head with, the intention of showing how the main characters minds, Mickey and Mallory Knox, worked, and how they viewed the world and everyday situations.  This makes the movie unique but is perhaps the reason that Tarantino didn’t like it, because in fact it is a little exaggerated in some of its themes.

Natural Born Killers criticizes, above all, the fact that society gives so much attention to the media and its scandals, as well as the TV shows that make it money and fame at the expense of sensationalism.  A good example is the TV show “American Maniacs” presented by the character Wayne Gale; a tabloid journalist that transforms Mickey and Mallory Knox into a huge success by creating a true fever within teenagers all over the world, who fall in love with the killers. Turning them into admired heroes who are envied and copied everywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, those who are not really into black humor or for the ironic approach to showing and saying things in movies will not understand and probably think that it is a positive portrayal of violence.  But with a more critical look, its easy to see that the movie is ironic with society’s irony, with the fact that everything is commanded by “fashion”, television, etc; how people let themselves become manipulated by anything that “popular culture” is telling them to wear, be, or think.

Also, for those that don’t really like violent movies, Natural Born Killers is not a good option, because it has strong scenes that were made to shock.

Another theme that the movie deals with is domestic violence, and how both parents can hide the abuse of their own children. It shows how what happens inside a home may psychologically harm children and teenagers that grow up and become frustrated adults, or in more extreme cases, adults with psychological disorders capable of committing the most random kinds of crimes and violence (which is the case of the main characters).

The most interesting thing about how they approach this subject that is different from other movies with the same subject, is they don’t represent the theme in the most dramatic way possible, but instead with a really sarcastic view. Much in way that society really does treat subjects like this, (taboos, that are only worth attention when the tragedy has already happened, like murders, etc).

It’s a pure critic to our dissimulated society.

In short: It’s a movie with strong scenes, a great sense of black humor, that deals with a controversial subject in an innovative way; a good option for those who like to “think” when watching a movie but also a good option for those that are just looking to be entertained. Either way, it’s a movie that is considered a classic by many people, and that definitely deserves a shot if you have not seen it!

Soundtrack:

Natural Born Killer’s soundtrack is one of my favorites.
It mixes different musical genres to fit the feeling of each scene.  For example, murder scenes that are paired with a song with sarcastic lyrics so the viewer is able to feel the situation from the main characters perspective.  Brent Lewis was able to create the perfect atmosphere for the story and to represent the main character’s personality the music as well.

Falar de Assassinos por Natureza é sempre um prazer!
Eis um clássico, sem dúvida alguma.


Quando assisti o filme pela primeira vez assisti apenas como entretenimento, não esperava muito, achava que seria mais um filme misturando ação/drama. Como eu estava errada! Assassinos por Natureza é muito mais do que um filme de entretenimento, é uma crítica fervorosa a sociedade, aos programas sensacionalistas, a como as pessoas se deixam manipular por qualquer coisa que veêm na TV. 

Mesmo sem muito entusiasmo quando assisti pela primeira vez, não pude deixar de adorar a forma com o foi colocado cada cena e tema; mesmo sendo as vezes um pouco confuso com suas cenas psicodélicas para uma grande fã de humor negro (o que devo dizer, o filme é recheado) como eu, o filme se faz perfeito.

Bem, quando assisti pela segunda vez, depois de ter conversado e discutido com amigos, passei a prestar atenção no filme como um comentário a sociedade e não apenas um filme de entretenimento. O resultado foi uma admiração ainda maior pelo filme e a certeza de que a parceria Tarantino - Oliver Stone não poderia dar errado. Apesar disso, uma das curiosidades do filme é o fato de que o roteiro foi vendido por Quentin Tarantino a Oliver Stone quando Tarantino ainda era balconista de uma video-locadora e Oliver Stone por sua vez, modificou vários aspectos do roteiro, causando a aversão de Tarantino que "renegou" a autoria do filme.

Fora essa pequena diferença de opniões o filme retrata seu tema com cenas bem surreais, fazendo um nó na mente do telespectador mas com a inteção de mostrar um pouco de como as mentes dos personagens principais, Mickey e Mallory Knox, funcionam, como eles veêm o mundo, as situações do dia-a-dia... O que faz do filme unico mas que seja talvez  um dos motivos de Tarantino não ter gostado, pois é realmente um pouco exagerado.

Assassinos por Natureza crítica em sua maior parte o fato de a sociedade dar tanta atenção a mídia e seus escândalos, assim como os programas de televisão que fazem sua fama e dinheiro às custas de sensacionalismo. 
Um grande exemplo é o programa de televisão “American Maniacs” apresentado pelo personagem Wayne Gale; um jornalista sensacionalista que faz de Mickey e Mallory Knox um grande sucesso, criando uma verdadeira febre entre os adolescentes em todo mundo, apaixonados pelos assassinos. Transformando-os assim em "heróis", admirados, invejados e copiados em todo o mundo.

Infelizmente para aqueles não muito "ligados" em humor negro, ou na forma irônica de se mostrar e dizer as coisas, não irão entender bem o filme e provavelmente pensarão que é uma apologia a violência; mas com um olhar mais crítico é facil perceber que o filme é irônico com a irônia da sociedade, com o fato de que tudo é comandado por "moda", televisão, etc; Como as pessoas se deixam ser manipuladas por qualquer coisa que a “cultura pop” esteja dizendo que elas devam usar, ser ou pensar.
Também para aqueles não muito fãs de filmes violentos, Assassinos por Natureza não é uma boa pedida, pois contêm cenas fortes, feitas para chocar.

Uma outra abordagem que o filme faz é a violencia doméstica, assim como a omissão por parte de mãe, pai ou ambos. Mostra como aquilo que acontece dentro de casa pode prejudicar psicológicamente crianças e adolescentes que crescem e se tornam adultos frustrados, ou em casos mais extremos adultos com disturbios psicológicos capazes de cometer os mais diferentes tipos de crimes e violência (como é o caso dos personagens principais).

O mais interessante em como o filme trata o assunto, é que, diferentemente de outros filmes com o mesmo genero, eles não representam da forma mais drámatica possivel e sim de uma forma bem sarcástica, da forma como a sociedade realmente trata assuntos como esses (tabus, que só são dignos de atenção quando ja aconteceu alguma tragédia).
É crítica pura à como nossa sociedade é dissimulada.

Em resumo: É um filme com cenas fortes, com um ótimo senso de humor negro, que trata de um assunto polêmico de um forma inovadora, uma ótimo pedida para aqueles que gostam de “pensar” vendo um filme mas também uma ótima pedida para aqueles que “nem tanto”. De qualquer forma é um filme considerado um clássico por muitos e definitivamente merece uma chance se voce ainda não o viu.

Trilha Sonora:

O trilha sonora de Assassinos por Natureza é uma das minhas favoritas. Mistura os mais diferentes tipos de estilos musicais para se ajustar ao sentido de cada cena. Por Exemplo, cenas de assassinato são representadas com musicas com letras sarcásticas para que assim seja possivel o telespectador sentir a situação com os olhos dos personagens principais. Brent Lewis conseguiu criar a atmosféra perfeita para a história e para representar a personalidade dos personagens principais.

Jane Eyre - 2011

Last Sunday, I went to watch the new version of Jane Eyre (my favorite book), based on Charlotte Brönte’s work.  To my displeasure, I found that they completely changed the history of the novel, ignoring important details of the story to the point where I wondered if the director even read the book.  Little things like the color of a main character’s hair, which for people who read the book is disappointing.  I sat there thinking how confusing it would be for those who never read the book, because the movie kept jumping scenes back and forth without clear transitions.

The next day, I went to a video store to search for something new that would interest me and, to my surprise, I came across another version of Jane Eyre that I had never watched before; a 2006 TV mini series that they released on DVD.  I rented it, went home, and watched it.  Four hours later, I was amazed with what they did with the plotline of the book.  They were able to transmit all of what I used to imagine reading the book, onto my TV (with some changes of course to adapt to a movie better), but with nothing that affected the experience of the book.

After I saw both movies, and saw how different they were from one another, I started to think: How is it that the exact same story could be so well told in one case, and so completely screwed up in another?  Was it the fault of the director?  The Actors?  Production?  Thinking about it, I decided to write this post talking about books that are made into movies: Does it work?

And since I have experienced two movies about the same story this week, I think it’s fair to use them as examples to answer this question.  The biggest difference between the two versions of Jane Eyre is the target audiences of each movie.  While one was deliberately made to be just another “Hollywood” blockbuster, clearly targeted to the formula that “sells”, with the pretension of making something more “public”, more “purchasable.” The version of the book I rented just had the intention of representing a classic piece of literature, being as faithful as possible to the original story in the book.

The recent movie made a “modern” version, as the critics say, but for me, it just completely changed the core story of the book; adding conversations, scenes, making it more sexual (which goes totally against the personality that the main character - Jane Eyre - has in the book).  But ultimately, sexuality sells.

My question is: at what point does a movie based on a book get lost?  Is it when the movie stops worrying about being faithful and becomes just another product like in the case of Jane Eyre? Or is that some books just shouldn’t be represented as movies?  I had the same experience with the movie based on the book The Celestine Prophecy, a wonderful story that was also killed by its movie version.

It’s also good if we look into those movies made on books that worked.  Like The Da Vinci Code, The Godfather, Harry Potter (one of the most successful movie series in history) and Lord of the Rings; a beautiful adaptation from J.R.R Tolkien’s book, and winner of 11 Oscars.  But why did these movies work while other movies made from books, which are just as good, didn’t? 

Can you only make a good movie if you’re faithful to the book?  Or should the director have the freedom to make changes wherever he/she thinks it’s necessary? In The Celestine Prophecy’s case, it’s a book that is very specific about the subject, and it shouldn’t have its story changed or scenes and conversations added.  But, if the book doesn’t talk about specific subjects, with a “linear” line of ideas, does this fact make it right for the director to change the course of the main story, or to add new scenes and conversations?  Does this make the movie good? Would that be the secret of making a good movie out of a book? What’s the standard for you to be able to make changes, or not?  Would the modifications made in the movies just bad seen from the fans of the book?

And what about the movies that are just “based” on a book’s story, but that don’t necessarily copy the story completely? Is it right to “steal” the book’s idea to create something completely different out of it?  Would it be accurate to say that the movie is just based on a book and has the freedom to change whatever the director wants?

Or does it not matter?

Jane Eyre - 2006

Domingo fui assistir a nova versão de Jane Eyre (meu livro favorito), baseado na obra de Charlotte Brönte. Para o meu desgosto mudaram completamente a história, ignorando detalhes importantes, ao ponto em que cheguei a pensar se o diretor havia ao menos lido o livro. Pequenas coisas como a cor do cabelo de um dos personagens, por exemplo, foi mudado, o que para quem leu o livro é decepcionante.

Eu estava sentada na sala de cinema imaginando o quão confuso deveria ser para aqueles que nunca leram o livro, por que o filme pulava de cena para frente e para trás sem nenhuma conexão entre elas.

Enfim, no dia seguinte fui na videolocadora para procurar algo novo que me interessasse e, para a minha surpresa, me deparei com outra versão de Jane Eyre que eu nunca havia assistido, uma mini série de 2006 que lançaram em DVD. Aluguei, fui pra casa e assisti. Quatro horas depois eu estava maravilhada com o que eles fizeram com a história do livro, conseguiram transmitir totalmente aquilo que eu imaginava lendo, para a tela da minha televisão; com algumas mudanças claro, para poder adaptar melhor, mas nada que afetasse a história.

Depois de ver ambos os filmes sobre a mesma história e sendo os mesmos tão diferentes um do outro, comecei a pensar: como a mesma história poderia ser tão bem contata em um e completamente estragada em outro? Diretor? Atores? Produção?

Pensando nisso resolvi escrever este post falando sobre livros que viram filmes:  Funcionam?

Como eu tive a experiencia de ter dois filmes sobre a mesma história essa semana, acho justo usa-los como exemplo.

A maior diferença entre eles é o publico alvo; enquanto um foi deliberadamente feito para ser mais um filme "hollywoodiano", claramente voltado as fórmulas que "vendem", com a pretensão de fazer algo mais "publico", mais "compravel", a versão que eu aluguei tinha apenas a intenção de representar um clássico da literatura, sendo o mais fiel possivel ao livro, ao original.

O mais novo fez uma versão mais "moderna" do livro, como diz as criticas; mas para mim apenas mudou completamente a história, adicionando falas, adicionando cenas, fazendo mais sexual; o que vai totalmente contra a personalidade que a personagem principal, Jane Eyre, tem no livro, mas afinal, sexualidade vende.

Minha pergunta é: Em que ponto um filme baseado em livro se perde? 

É quando o filme se despreocupa em ser fiel e passa a ser apenas “produto” como no caso de Jane Eyre? Ou alguns livros apenas nao deveriam ser representados em filmes?

Tive a mesma experiencia com o filme baseado no livro “The Celestine Prophecy” um livro maravilhoso mas que foi assassinado pela versão dele em filme.

É bom olharmos tambem para aqueles filmes baseados em livros que deram certo, como: O Codigo da Vinci, O Poderoso Chefão, Harry Potter (uma das mais bem sucedidas series de filmes da historia) e por que não citar Senhor dos Aneis, belissima adaptacão do livro de J.R.R. Tolkien  que foi vencedora de 11 oscars .

Mais por que esses filmes deram certo e outros que eram livros tão bons quanto não deram?

Só se faz um bom filme se for fiel ao livro? Ou será que o diretor pode ter a liberdade de fazer as alterações que ele achar necessarias? No caso The Celestine Prophecy, é um livro que é muito especifico quanto ao assunto tratado, e não deveria ter sua história mudada ou ter cenas e falas adicionadas.

Mas, se o livro não trata de assuntos delicados, com uma linha "reta" de idéias; esse fato faz certo para o diretor mudar o curso da história principal, adicionar falas, cenas? Será que isso é o que faria o filme bom? Seria esse o segredo para fazer um bom filme com a história de um livro? Qual o padrão para que se possa fazer alterações, ou não?

Será que as modificações feitas no filme são apenas mal vistas pelos realmente fãs dos livros?

E os filmes que apenas se baseam na história do livro, mas não necessariamente retratam ele? É certo "roubar" a idéia de um livro e criar algo diferente em cima dele?

Seria mais "decente" dizer que o filme apenas se "basea" no livro e ter, enfim, a liberdade de mudar o que o diretor quizer?

Ou não importa?
